Calibration Observations of Fomalhaut with the VLTI

چکیده
An investigation of the stability of the transfer function of the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer has been carried out through observations of Fomalhaut, which was observed over a range in hour angle from 21:50–05:24 on 20 October 2002. No significant variation in the transfer function was found for the zenith angle range 5◦–70◦. The projected baseline varied between 139.7 m and 49.8 m during the observations and, as an integral part of the determination of the transfer function, a new accurate limb-darkened angular diameter for Fomalhaut of 2.109 ± 0.013 mas has been established. This has led to improved values for the emergent flux = (3.43 ± 0.10)×10 Wm, effective temperature = 8819 ± 67 K and radius = (1.213 ± 0.011)×10 m (R/R⊙ = 1.744 ± 0.016). The luminosity has been found to be (6.34 ± 0.20)×10 W (L/L⊙ = 16.5 ± 0.5).

An Interferometric Study of the Fomalhaut Inner Debris Disk I. Near-infrared Detection of Hot Dust with Vlti/vinci
The innermost parts of dusty debris disks around main sequence stars are currently poorly known due to the high contrast and small angular separation with their parent stars. Using near-infrared interferometry, we aim to detect the signature of hot dust around the nearby A4V star Fomalhaut, which has already been suggested to harbor a warm dust population in addition to a cold dust ring located...
متن کاملCalibration of MIDI , the Mid - infrared Interferometer for the VLTI
Calibration of MIDI, the Mid-infrared Interferometer for the VLTI MIDI is the MID-infrared Interferometric Instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). It will perform long-baseline stellar interferometry in the N band (8. . . 13 μm). In the run-up of setting up MIDI, some preparatory tasks had to be solved concerning the calibration of the instrument in the laboratory. Being a...
متن کاملAn interferometric study of the Fomalhaut inner debris disk
Context. Debris disks are thought to be extrasolar analogs to the solar system planetesimal belts. The star Fomalhaut harbors a cold debris belt at 140 AU comparable to the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt, as well as evidence of a warm dust component, unresolved by singledish telescopes, which is suspected of being a bright analog to the solar system’s zodiacal dust. Aims. Interferometric observations ob...

Context. A new four-telescope interferometric instrument called PIONIER has recently been installed at VLTI. It provides improved imaging capabilities together with high precision. Aims. We search for low-mass companions around a few bright stars using different strategies, and determine the dynamic range currently reachable with PIONIER. Methods. Our method is based on the closure phase, which...
متن کاملTOWARDS CHARACTERIZATION OF EXOPLANETARY ATMOSPHERES WITH THE VLT INTERFEROMETER V. Joergens and A. Quirrenbach
The direct observation of extrasolar planets and their spectra is coming into reach with the new generation of ground-based near-IR interferometers, like the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The high contrast between star and planet requires an excellent calibration of atmospheric distortions. Proposed techniques are the observation of color-differential or closure phases. The differ...
